Engineering & Design.

Temporary Works.

We apply the rigour of permanent design to temporary conditions, prioritizing construction sequencing, alternate load paths, and realistic field tolerances. Our practice focuses on complex, constrained environments: occupied podiums, heavy load transfers, and structural interventions where deflection limits and service continuity are critical.

To mitigate fit-up risk on complex retrofits, we utilize 3D Scanning where appropriate to capture existing site geometry. Designs are modeled in 3D for spatial coordination; we deploy web-based model viewers to bridge the gap between office and field, providing site teams with interactive context to supplement the calculation package.

Areas of Expertise:

  • Shoring & Reshoring: Slabs, beams, transfer elements, and podium decks.

  • Formwork & Falsework: Design for vertical and horizontal elements, including climbing systems and complex geometries.

  • Hydraulic Jacking: Multi-point load transfer schemes and de-jacking procedures.

  • Structural Interventions: Column/wall load bypass, needle beams, and local strengthening.

  • Façade Retention: Support for cladding, canopies, and secondary steel.

  • Plant Support: Engineered bases for cranes, hoists, and MEWPs.

  • Staged Analysis: Construction sequencing and load redistribution checks.

  • Peer Review: Rationalization of proprietary or contractor-proposed schemes.

  • Fabrication Detailing: Connection design, erection sequencing, and access planning.

Retrofits & Repairs.

We provide engineering for the modification, strengthening, and repair of existing assets. Our practice addresses material deterioration and operational changes across all primary structural systems, from commercial retrofits to heavy civil infrastructure.

Adaptive Re-use & Structural Modifications

  • Load Transfer & Column Removal: Design of transfer beams and shoring to facilitate the removal of load-bearing walls or columns.

  • Vertical Expansion: Feasibility analysis and structural reinforcement to support rooftop additions and overbuilds.

  • Seismic & Lateral Retrofit: Upgrading lateral force-resisting systems (braced frames, shear walls) to meet current building codes.

  • Strengthening Systems: Design of carbon fiber (CFRP), steel plate bonding, and external post-tensioning to increase live load capacity.

  • Hybrid Connections: Detailing connections to tie new steel framing into existing concrete, masonry, or timber elements.

  • Mechanical Integration: Engineering support for new roof dunnage, heavy equipment risers, and slab penetrations.

Asset Restoration & Repair

  • Concrete Repair: Specification of hydrodemolition, partial-depth repairs, and galvanic anode protection for reinforced concrete.

  • Post-Tensioning: Evaluation and repair of unbonded and bonded tendon systems, including strand replacement and anchorage rehabilitation.

  • Steel Structures: Remediation of fatigue cracking, section loss, impact damage, and coating failures in bridges and industrial facilities.

  • Foundation Stabilization: Underpinning design, micropiles, and soil stabilization for settlement issues or increased loading.

  • Building Envelope Support: Structural repair of shelf angles, masonry ties, stone anchors, and balcony guard connections.

  • Industrial Slabs: Joint stabilization, dowel retrofits, and curling mitigation for high-traffic warehouse floors.

  • Parking Structures: Restoration of podium decks, including expansion joint replacement, traffic coating specification, and ramp heating systems.

Forensics & Insurance.

We determine the technical root cause of failure through evidence-based investigation, code analysis, and first-principles engineering. Our findings provide objective clarity for insurers, legal counsel, and owners in complex loss scenarios.

Structural Failures

  • Collapse Analysis: Investigation of partial or global failures in slabs, trusses, and transfer elements.

  • Determination of failure mechanisms: Assessment of overload, unintended load paths, sequencing errors, and progressive failure collapse.

  • Material Failure: Punching shear, fatigue, corrosion, and excessive deflection.

  • Component Failure: Detachment or instability of secondary steel, anchorages, and precast elements.

  • Construction Defects: Back-check of member capacity, detailing, and construction tolerances against governing codes and design assumptions

  • Reconstruction of failure sequence using observed damage patterns, debris configuration, and as-built geometry

  • Use of detailed geometry (survey / 3D scanning) to confirm support conditions, slopes, and actual thicknesses at failure locations

Expert Testimony & Legal Support

  • Independent engineering opinions on causation, liability, and standard of care for structural and building envelope industry practices.

  • File review: Critique of designs, reports, and forensic work prepared by others, including identification of technical gaps and alternative interpretations

  • Support for insurers and adjusters in evaluating coverage-related questions tied to design, construction, maintenance, or usage

  • Assistance in pleadings and discovery, including clarification of technical issues, document request strategies, and question framing

  • Dispute Resolution: Technical support for mediation, arbitration, and settlement discussions.

  • Litigation Support: Preparation of expert reports, opinion letters, and cross-examination strategy.
